Devils night, p.31
Devil's Night, page 31
I didn’t get a chance to tell my dad I loved him. Please, can you help? Or, I think there’s a spirit in my house, a murdered woman, can’t you free her? And worst of all, My daughter is missing, can you see if she’s on the other side?
Every one of those messages kept her awake at night. She wished she could help. But even if she could manage the feats they were asking—which was far from certain—she didn’t think she could stand it. Taking on the painful memories and the suffering of all those people, again and again…it was too much.
And she couldn’t stop thinking about that gun in her hand. How she’d almost killed Matthew, Matthew, because a ghost told her to do it.
Her father had told her she was special. You have a gift. But it wasn’t a blessing or a talent. She had a weakness. Without even knowing, she’d made the haunting in Eden so much worse by her very presence. Before this trip, Penny had believed that she understood how hauntings worked. Now, she realized that she knew almost nothing at all. She was afraid of what might happen if she faced a ghost like Marian again.
“I’ll keep telling them what I’ve been telling them,” Matthew said. “That you’re not available. But you’re going to keep seeing these things, right? The next time—”
“I don’t want there to be a next time.”
Penny didn’t want to be ghost girl. She didn’t want to be ghost anything. But those words kept repeating in her mind, like a promise.
Next time.
“But if there is—when there is—don’t think you have to do it alone.”
He put his arms around her. She leaned into him, closing her eyes.
