Chapter One: Waking up to Snakes
Saphera had finally woken up. But what had happened? The last thing she remembered was fighting Clairvanna and Cecilia, the two leaders of the Moon’s Silver, but neither were anywhere to be seen or sensed now.
She was laying on a metal table, in what looked like some kind of technological laboratory. All along the walls were machines and control panels. Sitting at one of these control panels was a woman, heavyset and with short, white hair and sunglasses, with a raven on her shoulder.
But Saphera was more interested in the table she was strapped to. She was held by her wrists and ankles by Immortal Snakes, creatures in the Wolf Warrior World that felt no pain and never died. They had their bodies wrapped around Saphera’s limbs and their fangs were latched around metal poles at the corners of the metal table.
If I can get my sword up to my hand, I can slash these away.
But the strap around her waist where Saphera kept Tachi was empty. Somehow, her sword had been stolen. Even if it hadn’t, escape was impossible anyway. Two armed knights stood at the only entrance or exit to the room, blocking the way out with two sharp weapons. There was no way Saphera could fight them off without a weapon of her own.
Even if she could, the woman and the raven were still an obstacle. The raven was watching her closely, but the woman was fully concentrating on the control panel she sat above. Saphera had the feeling she should know both of those creatures, but her brain was so fuzzy she couldn’t bring herself to concentrate on from where, and her sensibilities seemed to have been temporarily turned off.
How much time has passed since that battle? What all has happened?
Saphera couldn’t even remember if the battle had been finished, or what had caused it to end so early. Was it Sishara’
Saphera was a Wolf Warrior, a creature dedicated to the protection of her world, but she was also the Chosen One, the creature with a connection to all creatures, and a destiny to defeat The Darkness, her world’s persistent enemy. But this destiny had been fulfilled, and Saphera was fighting new alliances now, such as the Moon’s Silver, which she had been fighting before she ended up here.
Since her destiny was complete, she didn’t have to fight alone anymore. She could go on missions with allies from the Wolf Warrior alliances, which she’d had with her when fighting Clairvanna and Cecilia. But they were nowhere to be seen now.
What on Earth just happened? What exactly did Cecilia do to us?
The details of the battle were finally starting to come back in bits and pieces, and Saphera now remembered a shadowy blast Cecilia had hit her and her allies with, and that was the last thing she remembered. The battle hadn’t been stopped by Sishara, Cecilia had ended it herself.
But why? And how had she ended up as a prisoner in a lab? The battle had taken place in a cave, where the Moon’s Silver had kept a base.
Saphera started to struggle. She had to get free, find her allies, and figure out what was going on. But the Immortal Snakes wouldn’t budge, no matter how much Saphera moved. They were resilient creatures. Saphera had seen them only once before, surrounding a creature named Carmen, leader of C.A.S., where the Blood Wolf had been held after she and the Jewel Wolf had returned. She knew they wouldn’t be easy to damage, even with her sword. But maybe there was still a way she could get them to release their grip?
But she still had to figure a way to escape once she was free. She had limited options for fighting back without her sword, and there were four other creatures around her. One of those creatures was finally speaking, after a soft crow from the raven on her shoulder.
“At last, you’re awake. Now we can begin.”
Chapter Two: Elaborate Escape
Saphera’s sensibilities still had not returned, but she didn’t need them to recognize either of these creatures. The woman was Ms. Whisper, her high school band director who had tried to have her and one of her friends killed. The raven on Ms. Whisper’s shoulder Saphera recognized as Crow, one of the soldiers of former Bird Brawler Leader, Glocks, during her possession by The Darkness, and who she had killed to obtain her Wolf Dragon form after he’d killed the alphas of a werewolf pack.
The Leaders! Where were they? They should be gathered in the Underworld, but how had no one been sent to look for Saphera yet? Had her allies from the battle already been found? And what were Ms. Whisper and Crow doing together? The last time Saphera had seen Crow, he had been enormous. Now he was the size of an Earth raven. And Saphera knew for a fact he was able to speak, but he had only cawed, letting Ms. Whisper do the talking. Why wasn’t he speaking? Had he lost that ability as well as his enlarged form when Saphera took his wings?
“Ms. Whisper?!” Saphera exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”
“So touching that you recognize me,” Ms. Whisper replied, once again after a caw from Crow. “But we have no time for reunions. I wish to see this completed before one of your allies finds us.”
They’re all here then. Saphera didn’t say this out loud. She was still confused to the point of her mind being a whirl. She still had no memory of how she had gotten here or what had happened to bring her here. Ms. Whisper and Crow must have been revived after the final battle with the Moon’s Silver. But The Darkness was defeated. Had Clairvanna decided to bring its members back to help fight? Ms. Whisper was only human. What use did the Moon’s Silver have for a human?
She wouldn’t be the first recruited by the alliance. Shortly before Saphera and her allies discovered who the Moon’s Silver’s leaders were, she had been Shackled to LesArbola by Ayenkisa, keeping them under the mercy of soul destruction until a human she’d recruited was converted into a spider. The latest experiment of the Spider Ancestry, a human once known as Mrs. Collins, replacing Ayenko, who now had a light soul.
This reminded Saphera of something else. Ayenkisa she now knew was a member of the Spider Ancestry, but she’d once thought she was a human. Her middle school choir teacher, Ms. Paola. Maybe Ms. Whisper had been sent after her for another purpose. Was she supposed to have been a Darkness member all along? It would explain why she was now here with Crow. Perhaps The Darkness, realizing their desperation, had finally decided to recruit her.
But somehow this didn’t make sense. This sounded like a measure Wallenstein would take, but Wallenstein was dead. All that remained was his daughter, and Clairvanna led another dark alliance now, one that previously hadn’t seemed affiliated with The Darkness. Had Saphera and her allies managed to kill the Moon’s Silver’s leaders and now were fighting The Darkness again? Had Clairvanna kept them in reserve in case she was killed? But why would she? The Moon’s Silver was her alliance now.
Ms. Whisper and Crow were watching the control panel Ms. Whisper sat over, finally pushing one of the buttons on it. Looking above her, Saphera saw a smoking laser hit the table, slowly making its way up to between her legs- where her weak point was located.
Saphera struggled, as fiercely as she could, but how could she escape? She supposed the first thing she should figure out was breaking free from the Immortal Snakes. Even this was easier said than done. Still no amount of pulling or twisting was getting them to budge, and she couldn’t force them to release their grip, either. Their fangs were holding tight to the poles.
Desperate times called for desperate measures.
The laser was moving fast. She had to work faster. Yanking her arms down, she slowly pulled them down further and further until the Immortal Snakes moved with them. She kept her eyes closed. Her friends in the Feral Forest would question her devotion to nature for this. She didn’t like what she had to do now, either, but it was either this or get her weak point burned. What helped her to complete the action was that she knew she wasn’t actually hurting the snakes, but the sound of their skin slowly ripping apart was still almost too much for her to bear.
Finally, she heard a snap. One of the Immortal Snakes had lost its head. She pulled hard on the other arm, and that snake’s head snapped, as well. Now to free her ankles. She pulled her legs up, thankfully in the process slowing the progress of the laser. Slowly, the snake’s skin pulled, and just like the ones holding her arms, their heads snapped off.
Saphera was free.
She unwound the snake bodies coiled around her wrists and ankles and threw them back on the table, where they reconnected with their heads. It was at this moment that a loud caw sounded from the table.
“Knights, stop her!” Ms. Whisper commanded.
Now to overcome her next obstacle. Saphera knew she wasn’t getting out of here without a fight. But what could she fight with? Without her sword, she had no access to her wolf form or the animal plates. But there was one form she possessed she could use completely naturally. Raising her arms, she took the form of a great gray owl, just as one of the knights raised his weapon to her. The owl’s talons easily repelled it, but now another knight was after her. This one fell to the owl’s talons, as well, and with Ms. Whisper and Crow still behind the monitor, Saphera had the chance to escape. Now she could begin searching for her allies.
Chapter Three: Snake Woman
But first, she had to escape the building, as she sensed none of her allies inside. It was one she had never seen before. Wooden, with no light source at all, and filled with connecting hallways. Was it a maze? Would some paths lead to a dead end? Perhaps that was their way of trapping her.
Saphera had thought her sensibilities were only temporarily turned off when she was a prisoner of Crow and Ms. Whisper, but she still couldn’t sense anything. This meant she couldn’t tell if any creature was following her or trying to prevent her escape, and she couldn’t get away terribly fast without her wolf form. Her great gray owl form could move quickly, but it was rather large, and the hallways brushed against its wings. Soon, she had to turn it off and travel as a feral, which was her slowest form. She desperately hoped no creature with a dark soul was following her.
With my sensibilities disabled, I won’t be able to sense my allies, either. Saphera started to shiver. Was she alone here? Was she unable to sense her allies because they had already all been killed? She shook her head to clear it. It was unbearable to think of any of them dead. Besides, she couldn’t sense any creatures with dark or light souls, but she did wonder if her allies’ sensibilities would work, either. If not, they would have just as hard of a time finding her as she was finding them. This made her move faster, but every hallway in this building looked the same. She knew she couldn’t go back to where Ms. Whisper and Crow were, but she couldn’t even tell where they were anymore. She had already lost track of how far she had moved, and didn’t even know if she had been running in circles the whole time.
