A Rude Awakening

A Rude Awakening

Aldiss, Brian W.

Aldiss, Brian W.

In this powerful addition to the legend of a sex-prone sergeant, Horatio Stubbs finds himself in trouble with women - and not for the first time. However, quite uncommonly, Stubbs seems to be enjoying a period of success, with a bevy of eager women who all want a piece of him. The whoring, boozing and army horseplay of this novel take place in serious surroundings. The year is 1946, and British, Dutch, Indian, Japanese, Chinese and Indonesian forces confront each other for possession of the island of Sumatra.

The Canopy of Time

Product Description'Brian Aldiss seems to have always had a more oceanic sense of time than most science fiction writers, an almost measured vision of what will transpire in the long run, a time-sense which is reflected both in his fiction and in the pace and course of his career.' Norman Spinrad These nine stories from 1960, early in Brian Aldiss's long and productive career, were originally conceived as a single entity, and form a chronicle of the next forty million years. They are arranged sequentially, beginning with the near-future and ending, with 'The Ultimate Millennia', hundreds of thousands, or even millions of years later. 'One cannot help being struck by the variety of concepts, the mastery of style, the sureness of the dialogue, the depth of characterization, the fertility of ideas, and the urbanity of the wit ... here is a major talent at work.' A Soldier Erect

The lewd, crude hero of The Hand-Reared Boy, Horatio Stubbs, is on excellent form when his regiment is dispatched overseas to India to become part of the unforgettable Forgotten Army, where the main battle is with their irrepressible randiness. Eventually, the regiment is posted to the Burmese Front and plunged into the Battle of Kohima in the mountains of Assam. The campaigns against the Japanese are punctuated with riotous sexual jaunts, while the barrack-room life is side-splittingly coarse.
